How should we illustrate growth?

These are smooth planning assumptions – not forecasts. Choose the expected return after ongoing product costs. Real returns jump around and can stay negative for years.

Capital-stable 2% per year Example: an instant-access savings account or fixed-term deposit. Think steadier value, but rates change and may trail inflation. Illustrative – not a quoted bank offer Broadly diversified 7% per year Example: a long-term planning rate for broad global equities such as FTSE All-World or MSCI World. Both are still equity-only. What does the history actually say?

Cash-like products

“Tagesgeld” is an instant-access or call savings account; “Festgeld” is a fixed-term deposit. In June 2026, the German household aggregates were 0.51% overnight and 2.16% for new fixed terms up to one year. Their January 2000–June 2026 averages were 0.72% and 1.69%. Individual offers vary.

MSCI World covers large- and mid-cap stocks across developed markets. MSCI reports data through June 2026 and warns that pre-launch data are back-tested and past performance is no guarantee. The 7% choice is an illustrative planning rate; compare 5% and lower too.

Why 10% is an upside case

10% is an optimistic illustration, not a forecast. The official S&P page describes the index as 500 leading US large-cap companies covering about 80% of available US market capitalisation. That is one market, so compare 7% and lower rather than treating 10% as a baseline.

Would you like to model retirement too?

You will always see a potential monthly income at saving end. It is a net estimate: tax on the realised-gain part has already been subtracted. Turn retirement on to simulate the actual payouts and remaining portfolio.

What retirement would model 4% per year – not each month

Contributions stop and monthly withdrawals begin. The planner converts the 4% annual depletion into a 0.34% monthly share of the portfolio’s current value, so income can rise or fall with the market.

With a perfectly smooth 7% return, the modeled balance still grows about 2.7% a year after withdrawals, before inflation.

A long-term average is not a safety guarantee. Inflation reduces purchasing power, realised-gain tax reduces take-home income, order fees, spreads and custody charges are not deducted separately, and poor early returns can reduce both payouts and the remaining portfolio. Every payout shown here is net: the selected estimated tax is subtracted from only the gain realised by that sale. The classic 4% rule fixes the first year’s euro amount at 4% of the starting balance and then adjusts it for inflation; this model recalculates from the current balance every month.

Why 2.5%? It is a historically grounded planning default, not a forecast. The simple average of the published annual consumer-price inflation rates from 1950 through 2025, the latest complete year, is about 2.47%, or 2.5% rounded to one decimal place. Figures through 1991 refer to former West Germany and later figures to reunified Germany. Shorter periods can differ substantially, so compare other cases too. Estimated tax on realised gains

Pick the closest treatment. This rate applies only to the profit realised when investments are sold – not to the whole payout or account value.

🇩🇪 German equity fund Default. For a qualifying equity fund, 30% of gains are exempt and the remaining 70% uses the 26.375% standard rate. 🇩🇪 German standard 25% capital-income tax plus the solidarity surcharge, with no fund exemption. 🇦🇹 Austria A simplified flat 27.5% on the gain realised at sale. No solidarity surcharge, no fund exemption and no yearly allowance. No estimated tax Use only when gains are genuinely exempt, offset or fully covered by allowances (€1,000 per person or €2,000 jointly in Germany).
