Rürup, as a mechanism Germany

How does the Rürup Basisrente work?

Rürup trades liquidity for deduction. This page describes that trade; it does not make it for you.

Short answer

The Basisrente sits in the same layer as the state pension. There are no allowances: the benefit is that contributions are deductible, up to 30,826 euro for a single person in 2026, less anything already paid into the statutory scheme. In exchange the money cannot be withdrawn, sold, pledged or generally inherited, and comes back only as an income for life.

The deduction is the whole benefit

There is no state allowance and no employer involvement. What Rürup offers is room in the first layer of retirement saving: in 2026 up to 30,826 euro for a single person and twice that for a jointly assessed couple, deductible in full since 2023.

Contributions you already make to the statutory scheme count against that ceiling. An employee paying into the Rentenversicherung has used a large part of it before opening a contract at all, which is why the arrangement is mostly of interest to the self-employed and to people with high, irregular income.

What you give up in return

The money cannot be withdrawn, cashed in, transferred, pledged as security, or - with the exception of contracts carrying survivor cover - inherited. Contributions stopped part way through leave a paid-up contract rather than a refund.

The same illiquidity can provide protection only when the contract and contributions meet the statutory certification, assignment and contribution-limit conditions. Treatment in insolvency and means-tested basic-security benefits is not a blanket protection for every payment or every contract.

How the payout is taxed

The regular benefit is an income for life rather than an elective lump sum; narrow statutory small-pension commutation exceptions can apply. It is taxed on the same start-year ramp as the state pension. The first full year's calculation fixes a tax-free euro amount, not a percentage that is reapplied to every later increase.

What this page does not tell you

The value of a deduction depends entirely on the marginal rate it is taken against, and on the rate that will apply to the payout decades later. Neither is known here. Contract costs again vary widely and are not visible from outside.
